ATHENS, Ga. – After battling to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles action Saturday, MSU's seventh-ranked doubles tandem of Louis Cant and Malte Stropp advanced to the semifinals of doubles play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships Sunday, but both fell in singles action.
The top-seeded MSU duo, also ranked #7 in the country, Cant and Stropp drew another Georgia foe in Garrett Brasseaux and Will Spencer Sunday. State's tandem topped the Georgia duo 8-4. Cant and Stropp will take on Didrik Berg and Njal Stene of Stetson in the semifinals Monday at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The finals would be held Monday as well should they advance.
“We are playing on the last day of the tournament, which is always good,” said head coach Per Nilsson. “Louis and Malte played some good doubles tonight and we will see if we can do that again tomorrow.”
In singles quarterfinal action Sunday, the 46th-ranked Stropp battled Sadio Doumbia of Georgia, ranked #24 in the ITA's preseason polls. Doumbia, the three seed, took down eighth-seeded Stropp in a tough two-set battle 6-2, 7-5. Another Georgia player, upstart Ignacio Toboada upset MSU's 36th-ranked Cant, the #6 seed, 6-4, 6-2.
