Grimes' First-Career Goal Rallies Bulldogs To 1-1 Tie Against Troy
September 17, 2011 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Sophomore Morganne Grimes scored her first-career goal in the 86th minute as Mississippi State rallied to tie Troy 1-1 Friday night in the Bulldogs' non-conference finale at the MSU Soccer Field.
Playing its school-record fourth-straight overtime match in an eight-day span, Mississippi State ran its record to 3-3-2 heading into an SEC-opening road trip to LSU and Arkansas.
"You have to give the girls credit because they have played a lot of minutes in eight days. They stuck to the task, and I am very proud of the effort," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "The disappointment is that we are taking shots and getting into good offensive positions, but we aren't taking the chances. I felt we could have won the game comfortably tonight based on the opportunities we created. I'm frustrated, but you have to give the girls credit for getting through these last eight days."
Grimes' goal came following a Troy (4-3-1) foul just over the MSU side of midfield. The Dawgs directed a header toward the goal, and in the scrum for the loose ball, Grimes managed to get a foot on the ball and send it into the net.
Her shot rallied State to the tie after Alissa Jones hit a one-timer from 20 yards out that beat MSU goalkeeper Lisa Monteith to the bottom left corner.
Playing her first career match, Monteith made four saves.
In the first overtime, MSU had a chance to score the winner, but sophomore Elisabeth Sullivan's effort was turned away by Branham, who made 12 saves in the contest.
State missed another opportunity in the final 10-minute session. Dana Forbes' corner kick found Shannen Jainudeen for a header that deflected off the crossbar. The ball fell to Madison McKee, but she was denied her second golden goal in a week by Branham.
The night was full of missed chances for the Bulldogs. State was unable to convert on four on-goal opportunities in the first half, including a Tarah Henderson breakaway in the 19th minute.
The two teams played to a stalemate in the opening half, and the Dawgs came out firing in the final 45-minute session.
At the 55:38 mark, the Bulldogs had three chances, two by junior Zehra Syed and another by Henderson, denied by Branham in front of goal.
Eleven minutes later the Trojans struck on a Bulldog failed clearance, but State kept fighting and creating scoring opportunities before Grimes nailed the equalizer at 85:38.
