Simmons Scores Second Goal Of Season As Bulldogs Fall To LSU
September 23, 2011 | Soccer
BATON ROUGE, La. - Junior Jasmine Simmons scored her second goal of the season Friday night as the Mississippi State soccer team fell 5-1 to LSU in Baton Rouge.
Simmons' strike, her second of the season, came in the 69th minute when she dribbled a Lauren Morgan pass past LSU goalkeeper Mo Isom on a breakaway and punched the ball into the open goal from the left side.
Despite Simmons' goal, a strong first half by LSU (6-3-1, 1-0-0 SEC) dropped the Bulldogs to 3-4-2 on the year and 0-1-0 in league play.
LSU took a lead it would not relinquish 10 minutes after opening whistle. Addie Eggleston lofted a ball from the left side that sailed over Skylar Rosson into the right side of the net.
Rosson ended the night with four saves, while Mo Isom, her counterpart in goal, made two saves before giving way to Megan Kinneman for the final 16 minutes.
Eggleston helped increase the lead to 2-0 three minutes later as she found Taryne Boudreau for a breakaway goal into the left side of the net.
State had its first attempt with 28:07 left in the opening half. Elisabeth Sullivan drove the left side and tested the right side of the net only to have it stopped by Isom.
The Tigers closed the half with goals by Kellie Murphy and Kaley Blades to take a 4-0 lead.
The Dawgs continued fighting; creating an opportunity with four minutes left in the first half. Sullivan worked down into striking range, but her shot was stopped by Isom. The ball deflected right to Simmons, whose follow-up sailed right of post.
LSU pushed the lead to 5-0 just over a minute into the second half. The Bulldogs made a passing miscue, and Boudreau stole it and beat Rosson on the breakaway for her second goal of the night.
The Tigers out-shot MSU 16-5, including a 10-3 advantage in on-goal opportunities.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday, taking on Arkansas at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville.
