
State Linksters Complete Play At Mobile Bay Intercollegiate

MSU shot a 293 on Tuesday, its best round since the first round of its final tournament of the fall to bring its tournament total to 888. The Bulldogs finished in ninth place among the 15-team field, while Middle Tennessee claimed the tournament title.
Bulldog sophomore Robi Calvesbert led the Maroon and White for the first time this season. Calvesbert earned his first top 10 finish of the season, tying for ninth among the 84-player individual field. Calvesbert finished the three-round event with a 3-over-par 219.Calvesbert was among the leaders in par 3, par 4 and par 5 scoring and was State's leader in pars made with 39 total pars in 54 holes of play.
MSU junior Lee Heaton was the runner-up in the Bulldog lineup and finished in a tie for 31st among the individual field. Heaton fired a 1-over-par 73 on the final day of action to bring his tournament total to 223. Heaton was also among the tournament leaders in par 3 scoring and pars made.
State sophomore Brad Mason finished one-stroke shy of Heaton's total and tied for 38th among the individual field. Mason was MSU's leader in birdies made with 13. Fellow sophomore John Darden finished with a 54-hole-score of 226 and earned a top 50 finish, tying for 44th. Darden tied his career-best round of 70 on Tuesday with a 2-under-par effort. Darden was also among the tournament leaders in par 5 scoring and birdies made. Bulldog freshman Chad Ramey rounded out the Bulldog lineup with rounds of 79-75-75.
Fellow freshman Axel Boasson competed as an individual for MSU, so he did not account towards the team total. Boasson posted a three-round total of 225 and tied for 41st among the individual field.
"Today's weather was wonderful and was a perfect opportunity for us to get some good scores," Coach Clay Homan said. "We didn't quite get the scores we needed to really make some moves in the standings. I really felt John (Darden) played well today and showed a lot of what he is capable of."
The Bulldog linksters will return to action March 11 in Tallahassee, Fla., at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
