MSU?s Iakovleva Moves Into Southern Regional Quarterfinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ekaterina Iakovleva's upset victory over #75 nationally ranked Caroline Rhode Moe of Ole Miss Saturday has moved the MSU newcomer into the quarterfinals of the ITA Southern Region Indoor Championships. The event is the qualifying tournament for the ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
The Lady Bulldogs' second day of participation in the tournament concluded with the big victory by Iakovleva, who downed the fifth-seeded Moe in a three-set battle 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Iakovleva will meet Mary Anne MacFarlane of Alabama, the tournament's #1 seed who is nationally ranked at #27, in the quarterfinals Sunday.
"That was a big win for Kate," MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She has maintained a high level of play through three matches now. It was her first win over a ranked opponent and is a big confidence boost for her."
Posting singles consolation victories Saturday were MSU's Roseline Dion and Olesya Tsigvintseva. Dion defeated Samford's Lindsey Mallory on her home courts 6-4, 6-3 during the round of 16 of consolation play. Tsigvintseva also took down her opponent, Yvette Vlaar of LSU, in a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-7 win in an additional consolation match. Lady Bulldog Petra Ferancova fell in a tough match to Emily Zabor of Alabama 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Both Dion and Tsigvintseva will proceed to play in the consolation draw as Dion faces Plamena Kuerteva of Auburn and Olesya Tsigvintseva competes against LSU's Olivia Howlett.
The doubles matches in the consolation draw Saturday resulted in a tough loss for Iakovleva and Tsigvintseva against Tulane's team of Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson, 8-5. Khrystyna Pavlyuk and Petra Ferancova lost by default to LSU's team of Kaitlin Burns and Yvette Vlaar.
