
Bulldogs Advance In Singles, Doubles At Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – During the second day of action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, three members of Mississippi State's men's tennis squad advanced to the quartrefinals in singles and three State doubles teams are into third-round play after victories on Friday.
In the third round of singles action Friday, MSU's 73rd-ranked James Chaudry toppled Cody Hall of South Alabama 6-0, 6-0. State's fourth-seeded Malte Stropp, ranked #46 in the ITA polls, took down his Louisiana-Lafayette foe in Carlin Murray, 6-1, 6-2.
Also earning third round wins for State were 36th-ranked Louis Cant and sophomore Zach White. The #2 seed Cant breezed past UAB's David Zimmerman 6-1, 6-2 while White faced a tough Romain Bocaert of South Alabama. After fighting to take the first set, White easily topped his USA foe in the second, taking the match 7-6(4), 6-2.
27th-ranked senior George Coupland was knocked out of the singles main draw as he was upset 6-1, 6-4 by Vikran Reddy of Alabama.
Advancing to the quarterfinals of singles play, Stropp took down Louisiana Lafayette's Yanick Mandl in an easy two-setter 6-1, 6-1. Cant faced Jarryd Botha of Alabama in his round of 16 match, advancing to the quarters with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph. Also advancing to quarterfinal-round play was Chaudry as he faced Auburn's 57th-ranked Alex Stamchev, a 5-8 seed in the event. After taking the first set 6-4, his Tiger foe would not give as he fell in the second 6-4. In an epic third round battle, the pair fought back and forth until finally, Chaudry topped Stamchev 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1).
MSU's White battled through three sets in round of 16 action, but unfortunately fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Reddy of Alabama.
Swinging to doubles action, all three Bulldog duos advanced to the next round of play.The top-seeded and seventh-ranked tandem of Cant and Stropp held their opponents scoreless as they took an 8-0 victory from Tulane's Cedric Rutsaert and Iain Sneddon. Coupland and Seymour went head-to-head with Michael Wardell of Auburn and Nichols State's Damien Despetovski. In a back and forth battle, MSU's duo took a thrilling 9-8(4) tiebreaker to advance to the third round. Also advancing for Mississippi State was the tandem of Chaudry and White. In an easy 8-2 triumph, the Bulldog duo downed Romain Bocaert and Daniel Lietner of South Alabama.
In the first round of singles consolation play Friday, Bulldog Trey Seymour fell in a tough two-setter to Damien Farinola of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-1, 6-0.
The singles quarterfinals will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT Saturday while doubles play will follow.
