Bulldogs Post Stellar Day At USTA/ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – After the first day of action in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, several members Mississippi State men's tennis squad have advanced after posting wins on Thursday.
In the opening round of doubles action, MSU's tandem of James Chaudry and Zach White took down Elliott Minvielle and Ben Lee of Louisiana-Lafayette 8-2. The Bulldog duo will face Romain Bocaert and Daniel Leitner of South Alabama in the second round on Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
Swinging to singles action, all six Bulldogs entered received a first-round bye while taking three of the top four seeds in the tournament. 27th-ranked senior George Coupland, the #1 overall seed, took an easy two-setter from Tulane's Takuma Ohashi 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Zach White took down ULL's Minvielle after a tough first set 7-5, 6-1. The #4 seed in Malte Stropp cruised past his second-round foe in Tadju Davies of Troy 6-0, 6-0.
MSU's 73rd-ranked Chaudry faced Auburn's Rafael Rondino. In a quick two-setter, Chaudry took down his Tiger opponent 6-1, 6-0 to advance to third round of play. 36th-ranked Bulldog Louis Cant faced a tough opponent in Troy's Sami Ghorbel. After breezing through the first set 6-2, Cant battled in the second and finally topped his Trojan foe 6-2, 7-6(6).
Mississippi State freshman Trey Seymour took on Tulane's Shaye Wali. After taking the first set, Seymour fell in a tough tiebreaker in the second. Unfortunately, Wali proved too much for Seymour as he took the third set and the match 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
The third round of singles action will begin Friday at 8 a.m. CT followed by the second round of doubles at 4:30 p.m. at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
