Bulldogs Come Up Short Against UAB in Home Opener
August 27, 2010 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State soccer team created 19 chances Friday night, but the Bulldogs came up short in the 2010 home opener, falling 3-0 to UAB at the Starkville Sportsplex.
State fell to 1-1 on the year while the Blazers picked up their first victory to move to 1-2 overall. Mississippi State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Skylar Rosson matched her career high with six saves in the match.
“We didn't take our chances, and we had plenty of them tonight,” MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. “You have to take the opportunities when you get them. UAB took their chances, and that was the difference in the match tonight. I thought we really dominated large parts of the match, but we didn't capitalize on our opportunities. Now we have to regroup and get ready for a good Southern Miss team on Sunday.”
State fired 10 shots, two better than UAB, in the opening half. Sophomore Monica Alvarado had a shot stopped by UAB's Kate Blankenship, and freshman Elisabeth Sullivan missed two opportunities just over the crossbar.
Carolyn Polcari had a shot blocked by the MSU defense in the 13th minute, but she found Laura McCalla for the deciding goal two minutes later.
Macdonald's squad looked to equalize just before half, but the Blazers took the 1-0 advantage into the break after Kim Pettit and Rachel Wannek had shots stopped by Blankenship.
Both teams came out firing early in the second half, but UAB extended the lead to 2-0 as Polcari fired from just beyond the 18-yard box and lofted a ball over Rosson's out-stretched hands and into the top of the net.
UAB netted its final goal in the 84th minute when McCalla gathered a loose ball and beat Rosson for her second goal of the night.
After having a school-record 10-match non-conference win streak halted, the Bulldogs will try and start a new run as Southern Mississippi comes to town on Sunday. Kickoff for the match is 1 p.m. at the Starkville Sportsplex.
