MSU Soccer Opens Season with 2-1 Win at UT Martin
August 20, 2010 | Soccer
MARTIN, Tenn. – Mississippi State's 2010-2011 athletic year got off to a winning start Friday afternoon as Madison McKee's first collegiate goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Bulldog soccer team to a 2-1 road victory against UT Martin.
The Bulldogs (1-0-0) have now won 10-straight non-conference games going back to the 2008 season.
State ended the match with a 17-13 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in on-goal opportunities. The Dawgs also registered eight corner kicks.
MSU goalkeeper Skylar Rosson corralled four of UT Martin's opportunities on goal.
McKee's game-winner came 21 minutes after the Skyhawks tied the match on a Hannah McGowen penalty kick. Sophomore Monica Alvarado found freshman Elisabeth Sullivan on the right side, and the Memphis, Tenn., native delivered a perfect pass to McKee, who chipped the deciding goal into the right side of the net.
“I thought we looked very tired due to the tough training schedule we had, but I was pleased with the character our players showed in coming back at the end of the match,” Mississippi State head coach Neil Macdonald said. “There were a lot of bright spots for me. I thought we played good soccer at times, especially when it came to maintaining possession of the ball. It's early in the season, but I think we learned a lot about our team today.”
After allowing the tying goal, the Bulldogs fought back and put together a quartet of opportunities. Danielle Kite and Rachel Wannek had shots stopped in the 57th and 64th minutes, respectively. Sophomore Jasmine Simmons had an attempt blocked in the 67th, and Kat Walsh missed wide left a couple minutes later.
State out-shot the Skyhawks 9-5 in the final stanza after both teams finished with eight shots each in the opening half.
Despite being knotted in the shots column, MSU was more accurate, placing five first-half shots between the posts.
The Bulldogs made one of those five attempts count when senior Danielle Kite found the back of the net off a deflection in the ninth minute to put the Dawgs up 1-0.
Sophomore Jasmine Simmons fired a shot that UT Martin goalie Lauren Mackenzie managed to deflect. Kite, however, was there to corral the loose ball and chip it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage that State would take to the half.
State almost netted a second opening-half goal as senior Leanna Baldner had a free kick tipped away with 26 minutes remaining. The Meridian, Miss., native fired the ball toward the upper left corner, but Mackenzie managed to tip the ball away just before it crossed into the goal.
The Skyhawks missed an opportunity to net the equalizer with 22 minutes left in the opening half. Melissa Govea received the ball on a breakaway, but Skylar Rosson was able to breakup the initial scoring attempt. The deflected ball went right back to Govea, but her flick toward the empty net carried wide of the post.
The Bulldogs open the home campaign next weekend, hosting UAB at 7 p.m. Friday and Southern Mississippi in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
