April 22, 2010 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - On the opening day of competition at the historic Franklin Field the Mississippi State women's track and field team had a great day at the Penn Relays Thursday.
Senior All-American Wendy Copeland turned in the day's top performance in the long jump.
Copeland, a native of Tupelo, Miss., finished sixth in the long jump championship section, jumping 20 feet, 5 inches.
"I think we had a pretty good first day," head coach Al Schmidt said. "I think Wendy jumped pretty well since she hasn't jumped since Texas (Relays)."
In the college section of the high jump Jessica Merriweather turned in a Top 10 leap of 5-06 to finish ninth.
"Our 4x400 didn't have the best day, but we'll see how they do tomorrow in the sprint medley and 4x200 realy," Schmidt added.
On the track, the Lady Bulldogs competed in the 4x400-meter relay and 400-meter hurdles. MSU finished 18th in the prelim of the 4x400 relay running the second fastest time of the season, 3:41.37. Taleisha Lee ran 1:01.32 to finish 29th in the 400-meter hurdles Championship of America race.
"Tomorrow is a big day for us with the men's team getting started," Schmidt said. "It'll be a big battle against the sprint powerhouses in the 4x200 and 4x400."
Competition continues Friday with the Bulldogs getting started on the track in the 4x200-meter relay.
