Lady Bulldogs Fall In SEC Tournament Opener To Vandy

ATHENS, Ga. - No. 29 Vanderbilt (13-8, 8-4) powered past Mississippi State (9-13, 1-11 SEC), 4-0, in a first round match at the 2010 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament Thursday afternoon on the University of Georgia Campus, bringing an end to MSU's 2010 season.
"The girls fought hard today," said Lady Bulldog head coach Daryl Greenan. "We have a lot to build on as we move forward into next year, and we will regroup and be ready to play."
Today, Vanderbilt was just too much for State. In doubles, VU took wins at courts one and three to claim the point, before the contest at No.2 was suspended. At the top position, MSU's team of Olesya Tsigvintseva and Nataila Mayuk fell, 8-3, while teammates Valeriya Makarycheva and Mariia Ryzhova dropped an 8-0 decision to the Commodore team of Hannah Blatt and Rachael Dillon.
Up 1-0, Vandy continued its strong play on the singles courts. The Commodores won on all three matches on the final three courts, putting the win total at 4-0. Keilly Ulery ousted State's Ryzhova 6-2, 6-2 at the fourth position, while Makarycheva fell in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to VU's Dillon. Meanwhile, Blatt took a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over MSU's Danielle Terpko at the sixth court.
The remaining contests at the top three positions were then suspended with Vanderbilt holding a lead on each court.
Mississippi State now says goodbye to seniors Radka Ferancova and Valeriya Makarycheva, while eligible to return for the 2011 season will be Olesya Tsigvintseva, Natalia Mayuk, Mariia Ryzhova, Danielle Terpko, Jordan Zachary and Elizabeth Hall.
