Lady Bulldogs Fall At Auburn, 6-1

AUBURN, Ala. - 57th-ranked Auburn (9-9, 3-7 SEC) proved too much for the 66th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (9-11, 1-9 SEC) Sunday afternoon, ousting MSU, 6-1, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Lady Bulldogs could not play it much closer than they did today in doubles. After losing the contest at court No.2, the point came down to the final two positions, where Mississippi State and Auburn were neck-and-neck. In two tight affairs, AU came out on top in two tie-breaking sets.
"Doubles was definitely the highlight of the day," said Lady Bulldog head coach Daryl Greenan. "We put ourselves in a great position, but just came up short."
MSU's tandem of Radka Ferancova and Danielle Terpko dropped a 9-7 decision to AU's pair of Myrthe Molenveld and Paulina Schippers at the top spot, after the MSU duo held a 7-6 lead. During that span, Auburn fought through five match points to take the win. Meanwhile, Bulldog teammates Valeriya Makarycheva and Mariia Ryzhova fell in a 9-8 contest at the third court to the Tiger duo of Caroline Thornton and Plamena Kurteva. The Lady Bulldogs also held a 7-6 lead at that position, but were unable to hang on for the win.
All eyes then turned to singles, where MSU looked for four wins to pick up its second victory in SEC play. It was not to be though as Auburn took three quick victories to clinch the match and build a 4-0 lead. Schippers defeated Terpko 6-0, 6-1 at the sixth court, while AU's Chifchieva took a 6-2, 6-0 victory over State's Tsigvintseva at the top position. Those two losses were followed by Mayuk's 6-0, 6-1 defeat at the third spot to Molenveld.
State did manage to pick up a win on the next court, where Ryzhova ousted Thornton in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-0 at the fourth position. That would be MSU's only triumph of the day; however, as Auburn won out at the remaining two courts. At No. 5, Hastenrath beat State's Makarycheva 6-1, 6-3, while at No. 2 Vukadinovac ousted Ferancova 6-3, 6-0.
Mississippi State will be back in action this Saturday, April 17, when the Lady Bulldogs play host to rival Mississippi on Senior Day at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. CT, and MSU will honor two seniors, Valeriya Makarychva and Radka Ferancova.
