MSU Track Completes Day One At Alabama Relays With Two In First Place
March 25, 2010 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Not even less-than-favorable weather conditions slowed the Mississippi State men's and women's track and field teams on Thursday at the Alabama Relays.
The proof is in the results as senior heptathlete LaQuinta Aaron and sophomore decathlete Trevarus Christian both ended the day leading their respective events.
"It was really bad conditions most of the day, but LaQuinta performed great," head coach Al Schmidt said. "She's had higher scores before, but she was able to perform really well despite the windy weather. I'm happy with Trevarus' and Martin's (Lee) performance today, they both had personal-best in multiple events."
Aaron, a Tuscaloosa native, scored 3,074 points in the first four events of the two-day heptathlon competition. She led the field in the 100-meter hurdles (13.93 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (25.25 seconds). Freshman Racquel Farquharson also competed in the heptathlon and currently sits in 8th place with 2,673 points.
"LaQuinta is LaQuinta," Schmidt added. "She's a solid performer and now she just has to finish. And Racquel is competing in her first heptathlon, and is still working her way through it."
In the decathlon, Christian of Carrolton, Miss., scored 3,711 points to finish the first day leading the competition. He ran 11.05 seconds in the 100-meter dash to lead the pack. He also had top three finishes in the long jump (22 feet, 01 inch), shot put (40-08.75), high jump (6-02.25) and the 400-meter dash (50.86 seconds).
"Trevarus and Martin both had great days," Schmidt said. "They are working their ways toward personal-best performances this weekend."
Sophomore Martin Lee was not too far behind Christian ending the opening day in third place with 3,699 points. Lee finished in the top three in three of the five events.
"The good thing about the decathlon and the heptathlon is that it is a two-day event, and we've got another day of competition ahead of us," Schmidt said. "Tomorrow we just have to come back and finish."
Competition resumes Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. at Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex.
