State Has Great Day In Memphis At Rhodes Invite
March 20, 2010 | Track & Field
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Call it an exceptional day for the Mississippi State men's and women's track and field teams at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis Saturday.
MSU captured eight first place finishes en route to setting some records and set the tone for what is expected to be one of the best outdoor seasons in several years.
State put four relay teams on the track, with all of them coming out on top. Both the men and women's 4x100-meter relay teams took medalist honors, with the men finishing in 40.70 seconds and the women at 45.42 seconds.
The Bulldog 4x400-meter relay team ran a season best 3 minutes, 09.90 seconds to win the event for the second time this season, while the Lady Bulldog 4x800-meter relay ran 9:25.79 to take the crown.
"It was a great start," MSU coach Al Schmidt said. "Something to build off."
In individual events, senior Daniel Simpkins won the 3,000-meter steeple chase (9:22.47), sophomore Ed Weslea won the discus throw (164 feet, 7 inches), freshman Chloe Phillips won the 1500-meter run (4:38.74) and junior Taleisha Lee won the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.26). Lee's hurdle time moved her to second all-time in MSU history for the event.
In the 400-meter dash, senior Crystal Wilson moved to second all-time with her 53.86 seconds second-place performance, while Jody-Ann Muir set a freshman record in 54.45 seconds to finish third.
Freshman Brittany Covington also set a MSU freshman record in the 400-meter hurdles with her third-place 1:02.97finish.
