MSU Men's Golf Ties For Sixth At Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
February 23, 2010 | Men's Golf
"I thought we competed this week," said head coach Clay Homan. "But, the bottom line is we finished nine shots behind the winner and we have to close that gap."
In-state rival Ole Miss won the 18-team tournament with its 13-over-par team effort, followed by Illinois State and Louisville finishing 14 and 15-over-par respectively. SEC-foe Vanderbilt and nationally ranked Middle Tennessee rounded out the top 5 of the event. MSU finished in a tie with host-school South Alabama for sixth place.
For the third-straight tournament Calvesbert led the Bulldogs while he posted an even-par three-round score of 216, including a career-low third round score of 71, which included pars on all nine holes following the turn. Through his even-par efforts, Calvesbert set another career mark by finishing a career-best tie for sixth place among the 102-player individual field. Calvesbert posted 11 birdies over the 54 holes, which led the Maroon and White and is tied for third most among all individuals. The Puerto Rico-native was also among the leaders in par 4 and par 5 scoring.
Bulldog sophomore Lee Heaton was the runner up in the Bulldog lineup, firing rounds of 72, 75 and 75 to put the Oxted, England-native 6-over-par and a top 20 finish in the individual field. Heaton was also ranked among the leaders in par 3 and par 4 scoring at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate.
State's sophomore Brad Thompson notched a 54-hole score of 226, a top 50 finish and was tied for fourth among all individuals in birdies made with 10. True freshman Brad Mason finished one-stroke shy of Thompson and also finishing among the top 50. True freshman Mike Genovese rounded out the Bulldog lineup with rounds of 74, 75 and 80 to bring his three-round total to 229 for the event. Genovese also posted the only eagle for the Maroon and White and was one of only nine individuals to do so.
MState's sophomore Brooks Bankhead competed as an individual and matched Genovese's 54-hole score of 229.
The Bulldogs will return to the links on March 12, when they tee off at the Seminole Intercollegiate played at the par-72 Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
