State Men's Golf Completes Fall Action
October 24, 2010 | Men's Golf
"This was another tournament where we played well at times but just lacked putting together for three whole rounds," Coach Clay Homan said. "We are a young team and it shows at times with our scores."
MSU shot its best total in three tournaments at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate and its first round 283 was the fourth best round by the Maroon and White this fall in 15 rounds of play.
North Carolina won the tournament with a 31-under-par team total, followed by runner-up and ninth-ranked Auburn, third place Virginia Tech, fourth place Michigan, Northwestern in fifth place, sixth place Charlotte, Toledo in seventh place, eighth place Pepperdine and MSU tied VCU in ninth place among the 14-team field.
State was led by sophomore Brad Mason who led the Bulldogs for the third time this fall and the fifth time in his career. Mason shot a team-low round of 69 in the opening round of the tournament and ended with a 1-over-par 217 and tied for 30th among the individual field of 77 players. Mason was also among the tournament leaders in par 3 scoring and pars made.
Lee Heaton and Chad Ramey tied for the runner-up spot in the Bulldog lineup, both firing 2-over-par scores of 218 and tying for 36th among the individual field. Heaton notched consistent rounds of 73-72-73 and was MSU's leader in pars made with 37. Ramey was State's leader in birdies made with 12 and was one of two Bulldogs to post an eagle at the event.
Also posting an eagle was true freshman Axel Boasson who tied his career-best tournament total of 220 and shot his career-low round of 71 in the opening round of the tournament. Sophomore Mike Genovese rounded out the Bulldog lineup with a 54-hole score of 230.
MSU concludes the fall with four top 10 team finishes and a top 5 team finish. State will tee off the spring season on Feb. 12, 2011, in the Gator Invitational.
