Coupland And Ilyushin Advance To Semis At ITA Southern Regionals

The 11th-ranked Bulldog tandem got the day started off with a round of 16 victory over Branko Weber and Jamie Eccleton of Troy, 8-4, and followed that up with an encore win over UAB's Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser, 8-5, to advance to the semifinals of the doubles draw at the Regionals event.
Also participating in doubles was the MSU's team of Louis Cant and Malte Stropp who fell to the fifth-seeded South Alabama duo Romain Bocaert and Lucas Veil, 8-5, in the round of 16, ending play for the State duo.
Bulldog senior Tanner Stump picked up a pair of wins in consolation play of the singles draw, first coming over Frankie Hoar of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round and then in the round of 16 over Axel Sundberg of Jacksonville State, 7-5, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of consolation.
In the singles main draw MSU had three players advance to the round of 16 before being eliminated. To get things started, State's 79th-ranked Ilyushin defeated Alabama's Vikram Reddy, 6-3, 7-5, in the third round, advancing to the round of 16. Also in third round action, 56th-ranked Coupland took down Hanno Bartsch of South Alabama, 6-2, 6-3, and true freshman Malte Stropp took down UAB's David Zimmerman in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, both advancing to the round of 16 along with Ilyushin.
In the round of 16 all three Bulldogs fell to seeded players in tight three-set battles. Ilyushin slipped up to LSU's Mark Bowtell, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3, while Coupland fell to Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Stropp dropped a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, decision to 31st nationally ranked Neal Skupski of LSU.
Coupland and Ilyushin along with Stump will be in action on Sunday at the ITA Southern Regional Championships and results will be made available at www.mstateathletics.com following action at the end of the day.
