STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State freshman Rachel Wannek's header in overtime lifted the Bulldog soccer team to a 1-0 win over Troy in its home opener Friday night and pushed the team's school-record win streak to five matches.
Wannek's game-winning score, her third goal of the season, came in the 98th minute. Fellow rookie Jasmine Simmons sent a pass in from the right side, and the Woodstock, Ontario, native found the right side of the net with the header.
The win gave the Dawgs their first overtime victory since a 2-1 decision over Rice on Sept. 16, 2007.
"This was a great win tonight for our team," Bulldog head coach Neil Macdonald said. "Troy really did a nice job defensively, but give our players credit because they never quit fighting. Jasmine put a perfect service in the ball, and Rachel did a great job getting above the defender and netting the header."
State took a school second-most 39 shots against the Trojans but was unable to capitalize in regulation with the Trojans dropping tremendous defensive pressure around the net.
The Bulldogs countered with its own stellar defense, limiting Troy to just eight shots on the night.
MSU goalkeeper Taryn Holland, State's career saves leader, added five stops in registering her eighth career shutout and the second in three matches.
Troy keeper Ashley Branham hauled in 12 saves in the contest.
Mississippi State returns to the home pitch on Sunday, hosting East Tennessee State at 1 p.m. Admission to all MSU home soccer matches is free, and live video streaming will be available on www.mstateathletics.com.
