STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior Kat Walsh scored both goals as the Mississippi State soccer team defeated East Tennessee State 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field and improved to 6-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs, one of 16 undefeated teams in the nation entering the afternoon, took just 13 minutes to find the back of the net against ETSU (1-6). Utilizing her outstanding speed, Walsh dribbled down the middle of the field before firing a shot from 20 yards out that snuck past Buccaneer goalkeeper Megan Masch.
Walsh secured the win in the 87th minute as she received a perfectly-placed Jasmine Simmons pass and deposited the ball into the top of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
"Kat had an outstanding day for us. She has really been playing excellent soccer the last two weekends," Bulldog head coach Neil Macdonald said. "We did a nice job getting the early goal today, and I thought that we came out more organized and aggressive in the second half. East Tennessee State is a very good, organized squad, and their keeper made some great saves."
Masch made 16 saves in the contest as MSU tallied a school fifth-most 32 shots and 18 on-goal attempts. The 32-shot effort followed the team's 39 attempts in Friday's 1-0 win over Troy.
State's defense held ETSU to just eight shots in the contest, including two attempts in the second half, as it posted its second shutout of the weekend and the third in four matches. Senior Taryn Holland collected her ninth career blank sheet, stopping both shots she faced. The Franklin, Tenn., native moved into second on the all-time career shutouts list after becoming MSU's career saves leader a week ago.
The Bulldogs close out the non-conference slate next weekend, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for the North Florida Tournament. The Bulldogs play the host squad on Friday before challenging Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday.
