Lady Bulldog Tennis Team Suffers 4-0 Setback To No. 19 Vanderbilt At SEC Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? After losing the doubles point in a tight tie-breaker match on court three, Mississippi State's women's tennis team (10-10, 1-10 SEC) could not overcome a strong Vanderbilt (11-7, 7-4 SEC) surge in singles, losing the match 4-0 to the Commodores in Thursday's opening-round match at the SEC Tournament in Fayetteville, Ark.
“It was just real unfortunate for us today,” said head coach Tracy Lane. “We had a great opportunity to win this today and we just let this match go. I felt like losing that doubles point was just a real momentum killer for us and we have to do better in those situations.”
State started the day with a strong showing in doubles. After the MSU freshman pair of Natalia Mayuk and Olesya Tsigvintseva dropped an 8-4 match to Vanderbilt's team of Catherine Newman and Chelsea Preeg, the Lady Bulldogs picked up a big victory at court No.1. The 55th-ranked MSU tandem of Martina Banikova and Elna de Villers ousted VU's 38th-ranked duo of Jackie Wu and Heather Steinbauer in a tie-breaking 9-8 (2) affair at the top spot.
With both teams splitting wins at the first two courts, the doubles point was decided at the No. 3 position. Things looked good early on for the Lady Bulldog tandem of Radka Ferancova and Valeriya Makarycheva. After tying the match at 8-8, the MSU duo built up a four point lead in the tie breaker, but the VU pair of Catherine Newman and Chelsea Preeg stormed back to steal away a 9-8(6) triumph.
Holding onto a 1-0 lead, it was all Vanderbilt the rest of the way as the teams moved indoors due to windy conditions. The Commodores took straight-set wins at courts one, six, and three to seal the match at 4-0.
No. 61 Catherine Newman started the Vanderbilt surge with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over State's Banikova at No.1. The Lady Bulldogs then dropped another match when MSU's Makarycheva fell 6-2, 6-2 to VU's Courtney Ulery at the sixth spot.
Vanderbilt then clinched the match at the third position, where Keilly Ulery took a 6-0, 6-4 win over State's Ferancova.
The remaining contests were then suspended due to weather and time constraints with MSU holding a lead in only one of the remaining courts. That lead came from senior de Villiers who built up a 6-3, 2-3 lead over Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg.
With the win, Vanderbilt advances to play fourth-seeded Florida tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. CT.
