
Runner-Up Finish For Sainz; Team Finishes Ninth At SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team posted their second straight top-10 finish at the SEC Championships this weekend by finishing in ninth place at the par-72 Fredrica Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. The Bulldogs notched rounds of 293-290-301 for a team score of 884 and 20-over-par. The 884 posted by the Maroon and White is the seventh lowest all-time by an MSU team at the SEC Championship.
After posting rounds of 71-68-69 to finish at 8-under-par for the championship, senior Carlos Sainz, Jr. claimed a runner-up finish at the SEC Championships, finishing two strokes behind Florida's Billy Horschel. The three day total of
208 is Sainz's best career score for a three round event. The 208 is also the second best individual performance ever by an MState linkster, bested only by Graham Davidson's 205 when he won the SEC Championship in 1996. The second-place finish is the best finish by a Bulldog since MSU's Alex Rocha placed second in both 1997 and 2000.
Senior Noah Goldman finished tied for 43rd and tallied a 227 through three rounds, highlighted by a first day score of 1-under-par 71. Senior Matt Fast finished in a tie for 47th after his 12-over-par showing with consistent
77-75-76 scores for the three-day event. Senior Brian Mason finished the tournament with a 232 and in 55th place after standing tied for 24th after two rounds. Senior Josh Bevell shot a 236 with his tournament highlighted by a 1-over-par 73 in round two.
MSU finished 35 strokes behind the SEC Champions, Georgia, who notched a 15-under-par performance through three days. The Razorbacks of Arkansas finished second with a 2-under-par showing, followed by the Florida Gators at 1-over-par. LSU and South Carolina tied for fourth place at 8-over-par. Last years' champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide, finished in sixth place, two strokes ahead of Ole Miss. Vanderbilt finished two strokes behind MState for tenth place with Tennessee and Auburn rounding out the field.
MSU will await word on possible postseason play in the NCAA Regionals which will be announced Monday, May 4th.
