
Bulldog Golfers In Ninth After First Round At NCAA Southwest Regional

AUSTIN, Texas ? Seeking the program's first back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances, the Mississippi State men's golf squad shot a 305 in the first round of the NCAA Southwest Regional Thursday at the University of Texas Golf Club and stand in ninth place in the 12-team field.
The top 5 teams following this weekend's competition will advance to the NCAA Championship May 28-31 at the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in
"We struggled as a team today on the front nine," said MSU head coach Clay Homan. "We have to play better tomorrow. We are only nine shots behind fifth place and this is the type of course where, if we can go out and make pars tomorrow, we will be able to move up a few spots."
Leading the Bulldogs in the first round was senior Josh Bevell. The Southaven,
"Josh and Noah were both able to eliminate the big numbers" commented Homan. "They did a great job of minimizing mistakes and getting pars."
Senior Carlos Sainz, Jr., State's top finisher in the SEC Championship, is tied for 38th after a first-round 77. Seniors Matt Fast and Brian Mason shot rounds of 79 and 80, respectively, to close out scoring for the Bulldogs.
Texas Tech concluded its first round with a 282 to lead the field by nine strokes. Host
State will begin second round play Friday morning at 10:10 a.m. CT on hole #10. Saturday's final round is slated to get underway at 8:30 a.m. CT.
