STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State bounced back into the win column with a 6-3 college baseball victory over Memphis Wednesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
MSU snapped a four-game losing streak, while improving to 14-10 overall. The Bulldogs have now won 11 straight games against the Tigers played on the MSU campus. For the 2009 season, MSU improved to 13-2 at home. Meanwhile, Conference-USA member Memphis fell to 9-13 with the defeat.
The Bulldogs were limited to seven hits but took advantage of 10 walks by the Tigers and one fielding error. MSU did continue a recent trend of stranding base runners, leaving 11 more men on base in this contest.
After spotting Memphis an early 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs battled back with single scores in the first and second innings. MSU stretched the lead with another run in the fourth inning and two more scores in the fifth inning.
That offensive support would be enough help for a set of four MSU pitchers. Caleb Reed (1-1) recorded his first career win with the Maroon and White, working four innings, in relief of starter Drew Hollinghead. Reed allowed three hits and one run (earned), with one strikeout and three walks. Greg Houston followed Reed to the mound and was lifted during a Memphis rally in the eighth inning.
Chad Crosswhite struck out two and retired all four batters he faced to record his fifth save of the season.
The Bulldogs scored in the first inning without the benefit of a base hit. In the second inning, Grant Hogue drove in the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk. The lead grew to 5-1 in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Frank Rawdow.
Connor Powers, Russ Sneed and Rawdow each had multiple hits for the Bulldogs.
Memphis finished with nine hits. Chad Zurcher, Brett Bowen and Heith Hatfield had multiple hits for the Tigers. Bowen hit his fifth home run of the year in the Memphis sixth inning.
Starting pitcher Josh Ross (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers.
MSU returns to the road for weekend Southeastern Conference play at Arkansas. The Bulldogs and Razorbacks play at 6:35 p.m. Friday, 2:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
