February 28, 2009 | Men's Golf
CRESTVIEW, Fla. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team has taken control of first place through two rounds in the Troy Invitational at Heritage Plantation Club in Crestview, Florida.
After claiming an 11-stroke lead in the first round, MSU extended their lead to 28 strokes in the second round by firing a 2-under-par 286 to finish with a two round total of 582.
"This is a very challenging golf course," said Head Coach Clay Homan. "When you are able to get three scores under par on a course of this caliber it is very promising."
State senior Josh Bevell currently ranks first in the individual field after an even-par showing through two rounds, which included a first round 2-under-par 70. Senior Matt Fast sits one shot back of Bevell for second place after his 4-under-par 68 in round two. Senior Noah Goldman, who is making his seventh straight tournament appearance for Homan's squad, is in third after a 3-over-par (147) two-round score.
Seniors Carlos Sainz Jr. and Brian Mason are both tied for 5th with a pair of 6-over-par scores through two rounds of play.
"Keeping the ball in the fairways on this course is a must," said Homan. "We look forward to finishing this tournament strong tomorrow."
Redshirt Freshman Lee Heaton currently sits in a tie for 27th with a two round total of 157. Heaton's score does not count towards the team score as he is competing as an individual.
MSU will resume play at 9 a.m. Sunday in the final round.
