Lady Bulldogs Dominant In 6-1 Victory Over Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. ? For the first time since the 2005 season, the Mississippi State women's tennis team has started a year 5-0, after the Lady Bulldogs finished off Tulane, 6-1, Saturday in New Orleans, La. The match, which started outdoors on the Tulane campus, was suspended until Saturday due to rain and moved indoors Saturday morning after the Lady Bulldogs had already built up a 3-0 lead on Friday.
State started the contest Friday looking to continue their streak of doubles victories and hoping to win the doubles point for the fifth straight time this season. They would meet little resistance in accomplishing that feat, as they picked up two quick victories to take the point. The senior duo of Martina Banikova and Elna de Villiers ousted the Tulane pair of Caroline Gerber and Jessica Lange 8-1 at position No. 2.
With one court in the victory column for MSU, Radka Ferancova and Daniela Juskova picked up where they left off last week to power past the Green Wave's tandem of Marcela Fonseca and Sharon Seigel 8-2 at No. 3, clinching the doubles point. The MSU rookie pair of Natalia Mayuk and Olesya Tsigvinteva battled back and forth at the top spot with Tulane's Elizabeth Hamlin and Marion Kurdadze, eventually losing the match in a tight 8-7(4) affair.
After getting the doubles point in hand, the Lady Bulldogs would need three singles victories to clinch the match. They jumped out early on Tulane, winning the first set 6-0 on courts two and six, while also taking the first set on courts three and five.
Junior Valeriya Makarycheva continued her impressive play of late, picking up State's first singles victory in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4 at position No. 6 over Seigel. Following her lead, the freshman Tsigvintseva dominated in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph on court No. 2, downing the Green Wave's Hamlin. With the two quick victories, the Lady Bulldogs needed just one more court to come away with the win.
MSU would have to wait on that match-clinching triumph, however, as play was delayed overnight due to rain. Play finally resumed at 10 a.m. CT Saturday, with State one point away from taking the match. The Lady Bulldogs quickly picked up the victory in the first contest complete, as Ferancova ousted Marcela Fonseca 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. That win gave MSU the team victory.
Although State had taken the match, the two teams did finish out all matches. On court #1, State's Banikova dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to TU's Kurdadze. In the final match of the day, de Villiers of MSU battled back for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) victory.
Looking to remain undefeated, the Lady Bulldogs will next square off with 56th-ranked South Alabama this Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in Mobile, Ala.
