MSU Golf Team In Sixth Following Day One At Memphis Intercollegiate
October 19, 2009 | Men's Golf
The Bulldogs fired a 307 for 10-over-par in the first round and currently are 30-over par and trail fifth-place Iowa State by three strokes and are six strokes behind second place Xavier and Southern Miss. South Alabama leads the 16-team field.
True freshman Robi Calvesbert was one of two Bulldogs to complete his second round and leads MState with a 7-over-par 151 through two rounds of play and stands in a tie for fourth place among the individual 90-player field. Calvesbert also is tied for the team-lead with four birdies through the first two rounds. Sophomore Lee Heaton of State is in a tie for 11th after his first round of 75 which included 14 pars and is through 15 holes in the second round at 3-over-par. True freshman Mike Genovese was stopped in the second round through 16 holes and is even-with-par and tallied a first round score of 84. MSU's sophomore Brooks Bankhead put together a first round score of 81 and is 3-over-par through 15 holes of round two. Redshirt freshman John Darden put together a 5-over-par score of 77 in round one for the Bulldogs and is through 16 holes in the second round with an 8-over-par score. Playing as an individual for MState is true freshman Brad Mason who completed both his rounds firing a 157 for the Maroon and White.
"We didn't play very well, but the conditions were tough. The greens were firm and fast and we didn't do a good job adjusting," said head coach Clay Homan. "Fortunately it gave everybody trouble and we are still in position to win the tournament, but we've got to clean up our short game to make the comeback we need to win."
MSU will tee off the final round of play at the Memphis Intercollegiate at 9 a.m., following completion of the second. Live stats will be available at www.mstateathletics.com.
