MSU Concludes Memphis Intercollegiate With Top 10 Finish
October 20, 2009 | Men's Golf
The Bulldogs improved by five strokes in each round, firing a 307 in the first round, following up with a 302 and improving in the final round with a 297, for a team score of 906. MSU tied with host-school Memphis and Wisconsin and were only six strokes shy of fifth-place Denver. South Alabama was the top-finisher among the 16-team field.
Sophomore Lee Heaton was MState's leader for the second time this fall and picked up second-career top 10 finish, tying for 10th among the 90-player field. Heaton improved a stroke-per round tallying consecutive scores of 75, 74 and 73, respectively and was the team-leader and third among all individuals in pars with 40 through the 54 holes played. True freshman Robi Calvesbert of MSU finished the highest of his young career, tying for 32nd with a three-round score of 227 and was the Bulldogs' leader in birdies with six through 54 holes.
State's sophomore Brooks Bankhead fired a score of 232, which included a team-best final round score of 73. True freshman Mike Genovese of Mississippi State, improved drastically after his below-average first round score of 84, with second and third round scores of 73 and 75 respectively. MSU's redshirt freshman John Darden shot a 237 over the three rounds and was among the leaders in par-5 scoring. State's true freshman Brad Mason competed as an individual and tied Darden with a 54-hole score of 237.
"I'm not satisfied with how we finished but we held our ground and didn't drop any spots from the second round," said head coach Clay Homan. "Lee Heaton was solid for us and put out a nice tournament. I really liked how Mike Genovese came back after his slow start, but overall we have to continue to improve."
MSU will resume action at the links next week on Monday, Oct. 26 at the David Toms Invitational at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, La.
