MSU notched a team score of 290 for 10-over-par in the one round of action and tied with Georgia State. Host-school Alabama won the event with a score of 273 for 7-under-par.
For the second time in three tournaments, State's true freshman Mike Genovese led the Bulldogs, notching a 1-over-par 71 and a top 20 finish among the individual field, tying for 20th. In his second tournament of the fall, the Bulldogs' sophomore Brooks Bankhead fired a 2-over-par 72 and tied for 29th individually. MState's rookie Robi Calvesbert finished one-stroke behind Bankhead and tied for 36th. Redshirt freshman John Darden of MSU scored a 4-over-par and finished among the top 50, tying for 44th. Sophomore Lee Heaton rounded out the Bulldogs' lineup tallying a 79 in the one-round event.
"I thought we got off to a good start, as a team we were 3-under-par through the first six holes so we started the way we needed. We didn't play the seventh and eighth hole the way we needed, but we were still 2-under-par after the turn," said head coach Clay Homan. "A lot of positives from today, but in a one-day tournament you cannot afford mistakes. We threw too many shots away that we couldn't recover from. Our short game needs to improve but those are things we will continue to work on. We need to have someone step up and shoot low and that will make a big difference for us. Once we get that person to step up we will have a boost in our score."
The Bulldog linksters will return to the course on Monday, Oct. 20 in the Memphis Intercollegiate at the Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tenn.
