ATHENS, Ga. ? Mississippi State's doubles tandem of Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump extended their record to 3-0 on the young 2008-09 season Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships with a pair of victories, advancing to the quarterfinals of Division II play in the process. Beteran MSU netmen Ryan Farlow and Chris Doerr also advanced in their consolation draws Saturday.
Doerr and Stump opened the day by defeating David Lue and Luke Marchese of Duke, 8-2, Saturday morning. They followed that by downing Charles Bottoni and Grega Teraz of East Tennessee State in a close bout, 8-6, Saturday evening.
Farlow, a senior from Madison, Miss., advanced to round two of the Division I singles consolation bracket, defeating Roy Sichel of Winthrop in two tight sets, 7-6, 7-6. Doerr advanced to round two of the consolation bracket in Division II, taking a three-set match that ended in a lengthy tiebreaker for the third set over College of Charleston's Joe Nicolazzi, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(10).
In other action, sophomore Antonio Lastre dropped his third-round match to Jon Wolff of Wake Forest, 6-2, 6-2 in the Division II singles main draw. Freshman Bulldog Daniel Sanchez's first collegiate tournament came to an end on Saturday as the Monterrey, Mexico, native fell in two sets by UT-Martin's Alfredo Krywacz, 6-3, 6-3.
Play will continue Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
