MSU Cross Country Teams Dominate MSU Invitational; Scribner Sets Course Record
September 20, 2008 | Cross Country
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? On a rainy morning that led to sloppy course conditions, the Mississippi State men's and women's cross country teams overcame the dismal extremes to claim top honors at the 2008 Mississippi State Pre-SEC Invitational.
The men were led once again by senior Robert Scribner (Tupelo, Miss.), who finished with a time of 24 minutes, 56.93 seconds in the 8K race, a course record that broke Chris Boldt's time of 25:39 set in 2003. It's the second title in as many events for Scribner, who finished first two weeks ago at the Sewanee Invitational.
On the women's side, MSU talented freshman Renee Masterson achieved her first collegiate first-place finish with a time 18:35.08 in their 5K event.
"I hope Scribner has a magical senior year, because he really deserves it," coach Al Schmidt said.
The men's team won the meet with 29 points, with five runners finishing in the Top 10. SEC foes LSU and Ole Miss finished second and third, respectively. Following Scribner was fourth-place finisher Adam Lenz at 25:17.23, while Jonathan Rono placed sixth at 25:38.82. Cameron Vincent crossed the line at eighth with his 25:59.12 run, and Daniel Simpkins finished 10th with a time of 26:09.79.
"I'm very happy with our team and how they ran today," a proud men's coach Steve Dudley said. "I think all of our guys ran well today. It definitely lets us know where we are and what we can improve upon. With Notre Dame next week we can start getting points that will qualify us for nationals."
For the MSU women, Simone Dominque and Dominique Lockhart came in third and fourth place respectively with times of 19:00.52 and 19:10.89. Also coming in the Top 10 were Sarah Hammes in eighth at 19:43.80, and in 10th was Loren Bruce with a time of 19:59.34.
The Lady Bulldogs won the meet with 26 points over tough Big 10 opponent Northwestern and SEC teams Ole Miss and LSU.
"We ran as a team," Schmidt said. "Northwestern is tough. I love beating Ole Miss and LSU, but it's really good beating a Big 10 team. I'm really proud of our girls. It's a great day, especially when you beat SEC schools."
The MSU Invitational was the second straight win for both the men's and women's teams. They return to action on Oct. 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
