June 26, 2008 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Former Mississippi State softball player Hayle Guess claimed a program-record fifth SEC Academic Honor Roll selection as she was one of nine Bulldogs named to the 2008 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll which was released this week by the Southeastern Conference.
Guess' five selections include her 2004 nod to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. Nakita Boyce (Springfield, Mo.), Courtney Bures (Haymarket, Va.), Lindsay Hunley (Aurora, Ill.) and Gina McCloud (Monticello, Miss.) each earned their fourth selections to the honor roll after being selected to the 2005 freshman list.
"This is a great honor for these nine student-athletes and the Mississippi State softball program," MSU head coach Jay Miller said. "These nine, as well as all of our players, take as much pride in academics as they do their on-field performance. Being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll shows the hard work and commitment these nine players have put into academics."
MState, who tied for the fifth most selections among the league's softball programs, had Sammie Jo Bailey (Lithonia, Ga.) named to the honor roll for the second time in her career. Her sister Jessie and Cordova, Tenn., native Chelsea Bramlett were both second-time honorees after earning spots on the freshman honor roll in 2007. Brookhaven, Miss., native Megan Bateman closed her career with her first selection.
MSU placed 77 student-athletes on the honor roll, ranking it fourth among all conference schools in sports in which the Bulldogs compete. To qualify for the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
