MSU Completes Round Two At NCAA Championship
May 29, 2008 | Men's Golf
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team completes round two of the NCAA Championship, posting a 29-stroke improvement to round one's performance, with a 9-over-par 297 at the par 72 Kampen Course.
“We came out today and played much better,” said Head Coach Clay Homan. “Conditions improved as far as the weather is concerned and we started out strong unlike yesterday.”
MSU was paced today by senior Josh Oller, who fired a 1-over-par in the second round to add to his 84 notched from round one for a two round score of 157. Oller had the second highest birdie total on the team for the day, with four, all occurring on the front nine where Oller finished 2-under-par before the turn. Junior Matt Fast was able to score a 74 in round two; a nine stroke improvement from his round score and is 14-over-par entering the third round. Juniors Noah Goldman and Carlos Sainz, Jr. each tallied a 3-over-par score in round two, while Sainz led MState in birdies on the day with 5. Goldman continues to be MSU's overall leader at 8-over-par through two rounds and has recorded the Bulldogs only eagle in the tournament occurring on the par 4 ninth hole, which Goldman previously had bogied in round one. Junior Josh Bevell rounds out the Bulldog lineup with his 78 in round two for a two round total of 162.
“We only moved up one spot, but closed a scoring gap between us and the teams in front,” said Homan. “I know we are several shots away from where we need to be, but with an even better round tomorrow we could move up.”
MSU continued their trend of enhanced play in round one on the Kampen Courses front nine, with Bulldogs firing 11 strokes fewer on holes one through nine in round two after the Bulldogs notched a 24-stroke improvement in round one after playing the back nine in the beginning.
MState faces elimination from the field tomorrow if they do not finish among the top 15 of the 30-team field, in which the Bulldogs currently stand in a tie for 27th place. The Bulldogs will tee off at 1:07 p.m. with live stats being available through www.MStateAthletics.com.
