MSU Through Round One At NCAA Championship
May 28, 2008 | Men's Golf
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team struggled through the first round of the 111th NCAA Championship in West Lafayette, Ind. after posting a 38-over-par 326, tied for 28th at the par 72 Kampen Course.
Head Coach Clay Homan anticipated higher scores and fewer birdies after examining the Kampen Courses layout through the first practice round on Monday, but the Bulldogs fell behind early notching a combined score of 172 before finishing strong on the back nine with 148, with a 24-stroke improvement after the turn.
"We did not get off to the starte we wanted, but we did not quit," said Head Coach Clay Homan. "It could havebeen a combination of the weather (Windy and chilly conditions), but we were not as emotionally sound as we should have been. We got some high scores on holes we should have not and that forced us to play catch up early on."
MState saw zero birdies after their first nine holes but tallied six birdies in the back nine and were paced in scoring by their junior leader, Noah Goldman who scored a 5-over-par 77, and is the lone Bulldog inside the top 100. Junior Carlos Sainz, Jr. finished his round four strokes shy of Goldman, and posted a five stroke improvement in his back nine score. Juniors Josh Bevell and Matt Fast and senior Josh Oller are all tied with a first round score of 84, with Bevell pacing MSU in birdies with 3, all of which occurred after the turn leading to a 12-stroke improvement on the Southaven, Miss.-natives score.
"Hopefully tomorrow with a better tee time we can progress and move up in the standings," said Homan.
Mississippi State tees off round two from the first hole at the Kampen Course at 12:30 with live stats available through www.MStateAthletics.com.
