Bulldog Linksters In Fifth Place After Round One At SEC Championship
April 18, 2008 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team stands in fifth place after round one at the SEC Championships. The Bulldogs notched a 293for 5-over-par at the par 72 Frederica Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.
The Bulldogs were led by junior Noah Goldman who shot 1-under-par on day one and is in a tie for fourth place. Senior Josh Oller stands among the top 20 in a tie for 17th place after firing off a 73. A trio of juniors Matt Fast, Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Josh Bevell follow Oller consecutively after respectively scoring 2, 3 and 4-over-par on day one.
“Everyone contributed but our main thing was Noah being able to turn things around after nine holes and he gave us a huge boost. Josh (Oller) was very consistent with his green shots today,” said Coach Clay Homan. “We finished well and we were able to post some decent scores today.”
After going 4-over-par through the front nine Goldman shot no bogeys on the back nine and was able to include 5 birdies in his score. Despite notching a team-high six bogeys Fast tallied four birdies. Oller was the lone Bulldog to not notch a birdie in round one, but his only miscue on his scorecard came on a par 3, where the senior bogied.
MState trails the leading Crimson Tide of Alabama by 8 strokes followed by Georgia and Florida in a tie for second place after their 3-over-par showing in round one. LSU leads MSU by one stroke to control fourth place. The Bulldogs lead the Gamecocks of South Carolina by one stroke followed by Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky tied for eighth, Vanderbilt, Auburn and Arkansas.
“In past play we have buried ourselves in day one. You obviously cannot win it on day one but you can certainly lose it. We don't have to fight back from behind tomorrow,” said Homan. “There is still a lot of golf left to be played and a lot of things can happen but we have put ourselves in a position to be on the positive of that if we continue to focus on what we are capable of.”
MSU will tee off Saturday morning at 8:40 CST, with live stats being available on www.MStateathletics.com.
