April 19, 2008 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. ? The Mississippi State men's golf team fell one spot to sixth place on day two after firing a 292 and is 9-over-par after two rounds.
“We played a pretty solid round today,” said Coach Clay Homan. “And like yesterday we did not start off particularly well, but we finished the day strong which gave us a big boost.”
The strong finish included nine of their 13 team birdies coming from the back nine. MSU's 293 in round two was also tied for the fourth best team score of the day, beating the overall leader Alabama by one stroke in round two.
Senior Josh Oller was the leader for the Bulldogs on the day and through the first two rounds, firing a 73 1-over-par in round one. Oller followed with a 1-under-par 71 to set himself up at even-par through two rounds and a tie for eighth place overall.
“Josh has been a big player for us so far,” said Homan. “He especially showed up today and was able to get us our only score under par, which was huge.”
Behind Oller on the day, junior Carlos Sainz, Jr. notched an even-par 72 and is 3-over-par after two rounds and is in a tie for 23rd. Junior Matt Fast shot a 74 that included a team-high four birdies, with all four coming on the back nine of play. Junior Noah Goldman stands in a tie for 19th after shooting a 75 in round two, with his lone birdie of the day coming on hole-18. Junior Josh Bevell tallied a 77 and stands at 9-over-par after two days.
“We're in a position to win if things fall into place tomorrow,” said Homan. “We have talked about putting ourselves in this position all week and now that we have, we need to focus on what we are capable of doing tomorrow.”
MState will tee off tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. CST with live stats available through www.MStateathletics.com.
