STARKVILLE, Miss. - Kelsey Nurnberg and Elizabeth Woolven combined for a one-hit shutout, and three Bulldogs drove in a pair of runs each as No. 21 Mississippi State opened the 2008 home schedule with a 10-0, five-inning win over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Softball Field.
Mississippi State moved to 6-0 on the season, while MVSU dropped to 3-2 overall on a cold afternoon on the MSU campus.
SEC Player of the Week Chelsea Bramlett upped her average to .684 on the year after going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored in the winning effort. Freshman Ali Bainbridge drove in a pair of runs and scored once while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Courtney Bures launched her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field in the third, as she accounted for four of the game's runs. Sophomore Jessie Bailey was also perfect on the day, collecting a pair of hits while driving in two runs and scoring another.
Nurnberg moved to 4-0 on the year as she allowed just one hit and struck out five over three innings of work. Woolven pitched a perfect final two frames, striking out three of the six batters she faced in the game.
"Kelsey did a great job for us today. She got called for a couple of illegal pitches but did a nice job of adjusting. That is a good sign for our team. Elizabeth Woolven came in and shut them down today, and we hope Courtney Bures' big home run is a sign of her getting back on track," MSU head coach Jay Miller said. "Today's win is a good way to start the home season, and we hope we can continue it against some good competition coming in this weekend."
The Bulldogs, who advanced the series lead to 9-1 over the Devilettes, jumped in front with four runs in the first inning. Bramlett led off with a walk, and after stealing second, she scored the game's opening run on Bainbridge's single up the middle. After stealing second, Bainbridge scored two batters later on Sammie Jo Bailey's fielder's choice that was thrown away by the MVSU shortstop. A wild pitch scored Bures, who drew a one-out walk, and Jessie Bailey extended the MSU lead to 4-0 with a two-out base hit that scored her sister Sammie Jo.
MSU finished its scoring with a six-run third inning that was sparked by Bures' two-run home run over the wall in left center. Courtney Nesbit was hit by a pitch and Lindsay Hunley walked, and with one out, Jessie Bailey came through with her second hit of the game to score Nesbit and expand the lead to 7-0. Brittany Bell, who pinch-ran for Hunley, stole third and scored on a errant throw by the MVSU catcher, and Bramlett accounted for the final two runs as she drove in Jessie Bailey with a single and then scored on Bainbridge's double to right center.
The Bulldogs continue their six-game home stand Friday with the 2008 Bulldog Round-Robin. MSU will open the tournament with Wright State and Southern Illinois Friday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. State will face Fordham and Wright State on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. before closing out the tournament Sunday in a noon contest with the Salukis. Admission to all MSU home games is free of charge, and a full tournament schedule can be found at www.mstateathletics.com.
