MSU Lady Netters Complete First Day Of Action At Roberta Alison

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The Mississippi State Lady Netters advanced two doubles teams to the finals of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Friday. State also had two singles players win their opening round matches on the first day of play.
In doubles, Elna de Villiers and Valeriya Makarycheva advanced to the finals of the White bracket by defeating the Auburn-Montgomery tandem of Khady Berthe and Natalie Sienkob 8-6 in the opening round and then beating Maerel Beelen and Lynne Poggensee-Wei 9-7 of Iowa in the semis.
Into the finals of the Gold bracket is the Lady Bulldog team of Ren?e Joseph and Daniela Juskova. In the opening round, they defeated UNC?Greensboro's Brittany Cloer and Erica Zabkar 8-5. They moved on to claim victory over Jil Hastenrath and Mary Claire Slade of Auburn 8-4.
MState's other doubles pair of Martina Banikova and Radka Ferancova won their opening round match against Andrea Brenes and Tiffany Welcher of Alabama 8-0.
However, they ran into the 27th-ranked team of Carolina Walter and Tapiwa Marobela of Florida State in the semifinals, where they lost a tiebreaker 9-8.
In singles action Mississippi State's Juskova and de Villiers each won their opening round matches in the Silver and Bronze brackets, respectively. Juskova went up against Valeria Behr of UNC-Greensboro and came away with the victory 6-3, 6-1. In de Villiers' opening round match, she defeated Stephanie Viera of Troy in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
All of MSU's other singles entries dropped their opening-round matches but will resume play tomorrow in the consolation rounds of their respective brackets.
Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. CT at the University of Alabama Varsity Courts.
