MSU Has Top 10 Finish At Scenic City Invitational

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Mississippi State wrapped up competition at Scenic City Invitational in a three-way tie for sixth place finish after posting a round of 290 on Tuesday. MState finishes the tournament tied with in-state rival Mississippi and Southeastern Louisiana. For the second straight year, the Bulldogs finished amongst the top-10 of the Invitational, which included a field of 17 schools.
Junior Josh Bevell, was MSU's top finisher upon competing in his first Division I tournament. The Southaven, Miss., native notched a 3-under par 68 on the day, which was the low score of the final round for the Bulldogs. Bevell completed the tournament at 1-over par, which set him tied at 17th among individuals.
“I really can't say enough about his play of late,” said head coach Clay Homan. “Josh continues to improve every week and hopefully, as a team will start to feed off his improvement.”
Junior Logan Young entered today at 3-under par, but finished the 54-hole event at 3-over after scoring a final round of 77. Senior Josh Oller tallied his low round of the competition with a 1-under par Tuesday, finishing at 4-over for the two-day event. Junior Carlos Sainz, Jr., faltered after a consistent showing in the first two-rounds, registering a 76 in the final round. Freshman Bradley Thompson, also seeing his first action in a Division I tournament, responded well after struggling in round two, and matched Sainz, Jr.'s score at 5-over par on the final day.
“We came in the final day and moved up two spots, so it is always good to see the team as a whole improve. We were able to make quite a few more birdies today and our short game was improved,” said Coach Homan.
For the second year in a row, Charlotte claimed the crown of the invitational, with a 30-under par tournament score. Host school Chattanooga finished second at 23-under.
State will resume fall play on Oct. 5, when the Bulldogs will play host to the third annual Magnolia Cup against rival Mississippi at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
