MSU Claims Second Straight Magnolia Cup
October 05, 2007 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT , Miss. - For the second year in a row, the Mississippi State Bulldogs men's golf team swept both the Magnolia Cup and Cameron Cup in their dual match with their in-state rivals Mississippi at Old Waverly Golf Club on Friday. The Cameron Cup goes to the winner of the collegiate team while the Magnolia Cup is awarded to the alumni playing in the one-round event.
In the Cameron Cup MSU posted a 15-under par with a round of 273 to beat the Rebels who finished at 9-under par with a round of 279. MSU's Noah Goldman, for the second straight year, led the Bulldogs to the Cameron Cup title, firing a round of 66 to go 6-under par for the Bulldogs. It was the second year in a row Goldman was named the Magnolia Cup medalists and was also the second lowest score in Magnolia Cup history, one stroke shy of former Bulldog golfer Michael Knight, who shot a 65 in Cup play in 2005.
"Noah has come out two years in a row and claimed the Cup medal and that is an impressive feat. We are finally getting some under par scores we need to be a competitive team and this is a good boost for our fall season," said MState head coach Clay Homan.
Josh Bevell, coming off as the team's top finisher in their previous tournament notched a 67 on the day to finish at 5-under par. Junior Matt Fast saw his first action in the fall season and stroked a 69 for 3-under par, while redshirt senior Josh Oller rounded off MState's score, with a 1-under par round of 71.
Juniors Logan Young and Carlos Sainz, Jr. also were in action today for the Maroon and White, and posted scores of 72 and 73 for the Bulldogs.
The Rebels were led by junior Jesse Speirs, who shot at 5-under par on the day with a round of 67. Freshman Jonathan Randolph helped Ole Miss with a score of 69 at 3-under par, while senior Kyle Ellis finished at 1-under par with a score of 71. Rounding out UM's score total was junior Hugh Muse, who finished even-par with a round of 72.
MSU's alumni won the event for the third straight year, and continue to own the Rebels in this annual event, as the Bulldogs posted a 229, one-stroke higher than UM's 230. It was the closest score in the Cup's three year history, in which the Bulldogs have claimed all three Magnolia Cups.
The Bulldogs claim the Cameron Cup for the second straight year and move ahead in the series at 2-1 against Ole Miss in match play.
MSU will return to 54-hole tournament action on Monday October 8, when the Bulldogs travel to Memphis, where they will compete in the Memphis Intercollegiate at the par-72 Colonial Country Club.
