Lady Netters End Season With Loss To #31 Kentucky In SEC Championship

The setback ended MSU's 2007 campaign. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season 5-14 overall and 1-10 in the SEC. Kentucky (18-6, 6-5 SEC) advanced to the quarterfinals to play third-seeded Vanderbilt on Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
Kentucky took the early lead Thursday against State by claiming the doubles point. At the top position, Lady Bulldogs Martina Banikova and Valeriya Makarycheva fell 8-0 to the nation's ninth ranked doubles tandem of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk. On court #2, State's Renee Joseph and Daniela Juskova dropped their match 8-4 to Lady Wildcats Sarah Woestmann and Carolina Escamilla. Court #3 was suspended with UK 's tandem of Caroline Winebrenner and Whitney Spencer up 6-3 late over State's duo of Elna de Villiers and DeAndra Saddler.
UK then captured the first three singles matches complete to secure the team win. First off the court was the No. 2 position where UK's Schwenk took a 6-0, 6-0 match from State's de Villiers. The Lady Wildcats went up 3-0 when Woestmann posted a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over MSU's Juskova at No. 3. Kentucky then clinched the contest on court #5 where Spencer downed Saddler 6-2, 7-5.
All other matches were suspended once Kentucky had clinched. At the top position, Banikova was down a set and in a tiebreaker with UK 's Coventry at the time of suspension. In the same fashion, Makarycheva was tied in her second set 4-4 against Lady Wildcat Jessica Giuggioli after falling 6-4 in the first. And on court #4, Joseph was down 5-4 in the second against UK 's Escamilla after having taken the first set 7-5 early on.
