
Georgia Gains Series Split With 3-0 Win Over State

ATHENS, Ga. - Mississippi State Ashley Newsome matched a season-best with nine kills Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough firepower as Georgia (16-10, 7-9 SEC) turned back State in straight sets (30-27, 30-23, 30-22) at UGA's Ramsey Center. With the win Georgia earned a split of the season series with Mississippi State (11-14, 6-10 SEC) and topped MSU for only the second time in the last seven meetings.
Maria Taylor, Erika Clark and Lindsay Gehan combined for 37 of Georgia's 52 kills as the homestanding Bulldogs completed a two-match weekend sweep at home, Georgia blanked SEC West-leading Alabama 3-0 Friday night. Taylor totaled 13 kills and Clark and Gehan added 12 each. Georgia hit at a .330 clip for the match.
Mississippi State got a team-best 10-kill performance from senior Jamie Joyner. Senior middle Lauren Kowal delivered seven kills and led MSU with four blocks. Erin Seago finished with six kills as did Ioana Demian, with five of those kills coming in the opening set. MSU held a 36-34 edge in digs, with senior libero Megan Lukasek registering a match-high 14.
Mississippi State returns to action at the Newell-Grissom Building this weekend, closing out its 2007 home schedule hosting LSU Friday at 7 p.m. and instate SEC foe Ole Miss Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
