MSU Soccer Battles Vanderbilt But Falls, 4-0
October 22, 2006 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State (2-15-0, 1-9-0) came out of the gate flying, but after holding off the Bulldogs early, Vanderbilt (10-3-5, 6-2-2) took over, shutting out MSU, 4-0. With the loss, the Bulldogs have now lost eight consecutive matches.
Play began with both teams going up-and-down the field. Five minutes in, Mary Kate Ayers sent a shot from 20 yards out that went just wide. Just under three minutes later, Meredith Kohn blasted a shot that MSU netminder Stephanie Dallas saved. Amy Baumann got the rebound, but Dallas again thwarted the Commodores.
The teams battled for the next twenty minutes, with neither team getting an opportunity. At the 28:38 mark, Lea Lafield sent a corner kick toward the net. Susan McAleavey headed the ball towards on net, but the ball bounced off the right post, then the crossbar, and MSU knocked the ball out of its zone.
But, Vandy broke the scoreless tie at the 34:00 mark. Amy Baumann got the ball and fired a shot past Dallas from 20-yards out, giving VU the 1-0 lead. Just over six minutes later, the Commodores added another goal, this time by Nicole Lukens from 15 yards out for a 2-0 Vanderbilt lead heading into halftime.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Jessica Davis got the ball just past midfield and headed toward the VU net. Davis sent a shot from 30 yards out, but the ball sailed high, keeping it a two-goal game.
In the 67th minute, Vandy peppered Dallas with three consecutive shots, but each time, Dallas was up to the challenge, keeping the ball out of the net. However, seven seconds later, off a Sarah Dennis corner kick, Katie Schulz found the back of the net, making it a 3-0 game. Abby Jones and Baumann earned the assists on the goal.
Vanderbilt added another goal in the 74th minute to close the scoring.
Vanderbilt outshot MSU 17-4 for the game. Stephanie Dallas made seven saves.
We're playing good soccer out of the gate, said MSU head coach Neil Macdonald. However, when we lose a goal, our heads go down. A part of it is being young, and a part of it is that it's a theme. It's difficult for (the players) to keep it together. Over the course of the last four games, we've been very competitive. But today I was disappointed.
The Bulldogs close out the season next Friday night at 7:00 p.m. (CT) against rival Ole Miss. Seniors Sara Moore and Heidi Ondra will be honored before the match. You can follow all the action live at www.mstateathletics.com.
