October 27, 2006 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, MISS. - For the first time in three years, the Magnolia Cup will be housed in Oxford. Mississippi State fell to Ole Miss, 2-0, in its season-finale at the MSU Soccer Field. With the loss, the Bulldogs finish the year 2-6-0, 1-10-0 in the SEC.
Play began with both teams taking an up tempo pace. Less than four minutes in, Jessica Davis shot from 25 yards out was saved by UM netminder Ann Shelton.
The Rebels had a chance in the 16th minute. Hannah Weatherly passed the ball up the middle to Lyndsey Williams who split the defense and rifled a shot off the crossbar.
In the 28th minutes, Ole Miss began to pepper Dallas with shots. Dallas stopped Jennifer Hance's point blank shot, then denied Christine Liberto on the rebound. However, she could not stop the third attempt, as Weatherly put back the rebound for a 1-0 Ole Miss lead.
Katie Lynn Harden immediately took the following possession, dribbled up the middle and sent a shot sailing toward the net. However, the ball hit the crossbar, and the game stayed 1-0.
Seven minutes later, UM struck again. Liberto dribbled down the ride side, past a State defender before passing the ball to Chrissy Strini. Strini turned and rocketed a shot past Dallas for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
MSU came out of the half and immediately applied pressure. Three minutes in, Jessica Davis dribbled up the middle and fired a shot at Shelton. Brandi Parker followed that with a shot that went just wide.
But, the game settled down, and neither team was able to get much offense the rest of the way.
Ole Miss outshot MSU 15-8 for the game. Stephanie Dallas made seven saves.
