Mississippi State Opens Play At Hoosier Classic

Banikova defeated Kansas' Elizaveta Avdeeva 6-2, 6-4 soundly in the first round of the top flight to move into the semis. However, in the semifinal match-up against Viviana Yruseta of Kansas State, she fell 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(9), putting her in the third-place match. Banikova will face off against Anna Lask of Murray State for bronze honors.
After losing their first round matches, four other Lady Bulldogs came back to win their semifinal consolation matches and are set to contest for more consolation honors of their respective draws. Junior Renee Joseph started the day dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(6) loss to Notre Dame's Colleen Rielley in the Flight A. Freshman Valeriya Makarycheva fell to her first-round opponent, Kunigunda Dorn of Kansas, 6-4, 6-0 in Flight B. In another tiebreaker, sophomore Elna de Villiers fell short in her Flight C match against Notre Dame's Kali Krisik 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(5). Lastly, sophomore Tatiana Feit dropped her first-round match against LSU's Tiffany Tucker 7-6, 2-6, 1-0(6) in Flight D play.
Bouncing back after first round losses, the four all came back to propel themselves into the finals of their respective consolation draws. Joseph defeated host Indiana's Laura McGaffigan 6-3, 0-6, 1-0(5). Makarycheva bounced back by defeating Murray State's Rachael Lask 6-0, 6-2. De Villiers triumphed over SEC foe Ashley Murdock of LSU 5-7, 6-0, 1-0(3), after dropping the first game. Feit put up consecutive 6-3 figures to down her opponent, Angela McGahee of Murray State.
Lady Bulldog freshman DeAndra Saddler retired in her first round match against Indiana's Alba Berdala 7-6, 3-0, retiring due to injury. Her consolation semifinal against Casady Pruitt of Murray State was not played as a result.
In Red Round Robin action, Daniela Juskova competed in her first action on the season, but fell to Kansas' Yuliana Svistun 2-6, 7-6(3), 1-0(4). Juskova did not play in her second round-robin to another Jayhawk, Stephanie Smith.
Saturday will feature the final rounds for all singles draws and start play in doubles. Banikova and Makarycheva will compete against Murray State's Lyndsey Bochenek and Angela McGahee. The tandem of Joseph and Feit will sound off against Laura McGaffigan and Brianna Williams of Indiana. Doubles action will kick off at 9 a.m. CT, followed by the singles action at 12:30 a.m. CT.
