Made his Olympic debut in the 1500m at the 1928 Amsterdam Games ... finished second in the 1500m at the 1928 AAU Championships, which doubled that year as the Olympic Trials ... clocked his best-known time in the mile earlier that year when he ran 4:22.2 at Travers Island, New York ... captained State's 1924 track team ... followed his former head coach Earl C. "Billy" Hayes to Indiana to begin his coaching career as a track assistant ... inducted into both the Mississippi State and Indiana University Halls of Fame in 1970 and 1985, respectively ... led Hoosier cross country teams to three Big Ten championships and two AAU championships ... earned world-wide recognition in the field of research on the physiology of exercise, which in 1967 won him the Honor Award of the American College of Sports Medicine.
