No. 17 State Run-Rules Samford On The Road
April 14, 2026 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 17 Mississippi State wasted little time asserting control Tuesday night, riding a pair of big early innings to an 11-1 run-rule victory over Samford in seven innings at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Mississippi State (27-10) scored twice in the first, erupted for five runs in the second and added four more in the fifth to cruise behind a balanced offensive attack and a steady showing on the mound.
State set the tone in the opening frame when Reed Stallman launched a two-run homer to right field, plating Ace Reese and giving MSU an early 2-0 edge.
The game broke open an inning later. MSU sent nine men to the plate and capitalized on free passes and timely hitting. Aidan Teel delivered a two-run single, Reese followed with an RBI double and Gehrig Frei capped the surge with a two-run single up the middle, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Samford (17-18) managed its lone run in the third inning when Pierce Dutton tripled and scored on Jake Souders' single, but that would be the extent of the offense against State's pitching staff.
Mississippi State answered emphatically in the fifth. Kevin Milewski opened the inning with a solo home run, and Reese and Noah Sullivan each drove in runs as part of a four-run frame that stretched the advantage to 11-1 and triggered the run rule.
Reese led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Teel added two hits and two RBIs, while Stallman finished with a home run and two RBIs. Sullivan and Frei chipped in two RBIs apiece as MSU totaled 10 hits and drew nine walks.
On the mound, MSU used four pitchers to limit Samford to three hits. Starter Chris Billingsley Jr. allowed one run over three innings, and Maddox Miller (2-2) earned the win with two scoreless frames in relief. Tyler Pitzer and Peyton Fowler combined to close out the final two innings without allowing a run.
Samford starter Ryan Vermillion (1-1) was tagged for seven runs in 1 2/3 innings as Mississippi State took control early and never looked back.
MSU continues on the road this weekend at South Carolina for a three-game series. Friday's opener is set for a 6 p.m. CT start on SEC Network+.
