No. 3 MSU Rallies With A Seven-Run Seventh To Top Tulane
March 10, 2026 | Baseball
BILOXI - Third-ranked Mississippi State erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning to rally past Tulane 11–7 Tuesday night in front of the second-largest crowd in Keesler Federal Park history.
A crowd of 6,112 watched the Diamond Dawgs erase a five-run deficit and turn a quiet night at the plate into a late offensive explosion as MSU improved to 15-2 on the season.
Tulane jumped in front early, scoring twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Jason Wachs and a sacrifice fly from Nolan Nawrocki. Mississippi State answered immediately when Noah Sullivan doubled home Drew Wyers before Reed Stallman followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2–2 in the bottom of the inning.
The Green Wave regained control in the fourth when Nate Johnson blasted a two-run homer to right field, pushing Tulane ahead 4–2. Tulane added three more runs in the seventh, highlighted by RBI hits from Tye Wood and Matthias Haas and a steal of home by Haas, stretching the lead to 7–2.
That's when the Bulldogs' offense came alive.
State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Ace Reese delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a grand slam to left-center field to suddenly pull the Bulldogs even.
The inning was far from finished.
Sullivan reached on an error and later scored on Stallman's RBI single. Gehrig Frei followed with a run-scoring double, and Chone James added an RBI single to cap a stunning seven-run outburst that gave Mississippi State a 9–7 lead.
The Diamond Dawgs padded the lead in the eighth when Wyers lifted a sacrifice fly and Frei drove in another run with a single, extending the advantage to 11–7.
Mississippi State pounded out 12 hits in the victory. Frei finished with two hits and two RBIs, Stallman added two hits and two RBIs, and Reese's grand slam accounted for four RBIs.
On the mound, Dane Burns picked up the win in relief as the MSU bullpen stabilized after Tulane's seventh-inning surge. Chris Billingsley Jr. and Ben Davis combined to close the final two innings without allowing a run.
Tulane collected 10 hits in the loss, including three from Wachs and a pair from Wood.
The Bulldogs begin Southeastern Conference play at Arkansas this weekend. Game 1 is slated for Friday at 6 p.m. on SEC Network +.
