
State Prepares to Start SEC Play

STARKVILLE, Miss. - No. 26 Mississippi State women's tennis enters conference play on an 8-0 season record.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play their first SEC matchup against No. 29 Alabama in Starkville on February 22 at 12 p.m. Later in the day State will be completing its fourth doubleheader of the season against Alabama A&M at 3 p.m.
Mississippi State looks to continue its strong non-conference play under head coach Chris Hooshyar when playing against Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs have compiled a 27–3 record in non-conference action across his time here at State and is 23-5 when playing a doubleheader.
State enters the weekend riding momentum from two road wins against Furman and Georgia Tech. On Thursday, Feb. 12, MSU defeated the Paladines 6-1 before earning a 4-2 win at Georgia Tech on Feb. 14.
The Bulldogs earn a ranking of No. 26 in the latest ITA team rankings. This ranking is the programs highest ranking since 2020. With SEC play starting on Sunday, this is also State's highest ITA Ranking entering SEC play since 2020 when they were tied for No.25. In doubles play, the nationally ranked tandem of Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz sits at No. 13 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. The duo captured its first win together this season with a dominant 6–0 victory over Georgia Southern's Mackenzie Leopold and Evelyn Warkentin on Feb 6.
Alabama A&M will be traveling to Samford on Feb. 21 for a match before heading to Starkville. The opposing bulldogs are 0-4 on the season after falling to Jacksonville State on Feb. 18. Mississippi State is undefeated against AAMU with a 4-0 series record. Within the matchups State has swept Alabama A&M 7-0 in all four meetings.
Alabama enters the weekend with an 8-0 record going into conference play. Alabama's Kristina Paskauskas is in the No. 53 spot in this ITA singles rankings. The Crimson Tide is coming off a win against Minnesota 4-0 in Minneapolis. State is 19-39 in series history against Alabama. MSU last defeated Alabama in 2022 in Starkville, 4-2.
