Kids Coach - Westin Cooper
February 14, 2026 | Baseball
Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are.Â
Â
This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Westin Cooper of Starkville.
Â
When he was 6 years old, Westin was rushed to the ER at Children's of Mississippi with dangerously high blood sugar. He was admitted to the pediatric ICU for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of diabetes.Â
Â
Westin stayed in the hospital for a week getting expert care for his condition. His mom says the playroom and the toys helped his week pass more quickly, and everyone was really kind and compassionate.
Â
Westin's diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes was a shock and surprise, but he has taken each shot, finger prick and treatment with courage and strength.Â
Â
Now 9 years old, Westin is doing great! He is very active and independent, enjoying basketball and football. He collects baseball cards and loves to read. His special buddy is Champ, his diabetic alert dog!
Â
And he is a really big fan of the MSU Bulldogs!
Â
Have fun at Saturday's game, Westin. Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
