Petar Jovanovic Earns SEC Player of the Week Honors
April 09, 2025 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Petar Jovanovic was named a Co-Player of the Week by the SEC after helping the Bulldogs take down No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 29 Auburn. This is the second career SEC player of the week honor for him and also the second one of the season for MSU. His teammate and doubles partner, Benito Sanchez Martinez, won this award on March 26.Â
Jovanovic, a Podgorica, Montenegro native, has anchored the No. 1 and No. 2 positions all year for the Maroon and White in singles. He came into last weekend with a three-match win streak and extended it to five, defeating Texas A&M's Alan Magadan (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) and Auburn's No. 57 Alex Frusina (6-4, 7-5). The win over Magadan clinched the match for State and the ranked victory over Frusina was his fifth, which is the second-most on the team.
In doubles play, the pair of Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez, who are the No. 2 ranked tandem in the nation, bested two top 25 ranked pairs. The MSU duo defeated No. 21 Theo Papamalamis and Togan Tokac of Texas A&M (6-1) and No. 13 Billy Blaydes and Will Nolan of Auburn (6-2). They won the doubles point in both matches and even clinched it against Blaydes and Nolan. The win marked their 13th victory over a ranked opponent this season, which is the most in the SEC by one pair, and extended their career-best win streak to ten matches. They are currently undefeated in SEC play with a 10-0 record.
Jovanovic and No. 11 Mississippi State will be back in action this weekend with a pair of matches. State plays arch rival No. 54 Ole Miss on Friday at 5 p.m. and No. 33 Alabama at 1 p.m. Both are away matches for the Bulldogs since they are coming off of a five-match homestand.
